NEW HOME PAGE
for DAVIDSON COUNTY HISTORICAL MUSEUM
Davidson County has redesigned its website, presenting an exciting opportunity for the Historical Museum to share information about local history.
Plan to visit by reading about our “Featured Exhibits” or review content from past exhibits (“Davidson County History”). Use our new menus to find information about the Old Courthouse, our tours and programs, and books and publications available for purchase. You can learn about this area’s development from prehistoric times through the 18th century frontier settlement period. The story continues as our Courthouses become the seat of local government and the center of civic and community life. Davidson County’s transition from an agriculture based economy into a manufacturing center based on two industries – cotton mills and furniture factories – moves our story to the present day, including recent changes in our economic base.
You can access our on-line book store and purchase publications about the Old Courthouse, early settlement period, the Civil War, and Davidson County’s participation in World War II, both at home and abroad. Our newest publication is the companion book for our current exhibit, written by Jim Daniel, and tells the little known history of the earliest inhabitants of the area that is now Davidson County.
The Museum is located in the 1858 Davidson County Courthouse on the Square in Lexington, NC, one of the few historic buildings in the area open to the public. Information on this iconic landmark is available on this website, as well as our 2008 publication, “The Best We Ever Saw: The Early Courthouses of Davidson County, North Carolina.”
You can also learn how to use our permanent collections as you do your own research on local history. The collection has images, artifacts and archival materials that relate to Davidson County, North Carolina - a total of nearly 30,000 items. It is made available to the public through our exhibits, this website, and (by special arrangement) as a study and research collection. Our staff is always available to assist you with your inquires about local history, and can refer you to other resources and points of interest in the county, such as the Genealogy Room at the Lexington and Thomasville branches of the Public Library Department.
Here is a listing of the information contained in this site. Use the menus at the left of the page to find exactly what you are looking for!
