Davidson SWCD is offering a week long Environmental Science Day Camp during the week of July 11th through the 15th. The Camp will begin at 8:00 am and will conclude at 5:00 pm daily. It will include hands on classroom activities and field trips to various locations. Various topics relating to the environmental sciences will be covered. The Camp is open to students who will be in grades 6 through 12 in the fall. The base for the Camp will be the Davidson County Agricultural Center located at 301 East Center Street in Lexington.
The Camp is designed to provide insight into a variety of environmental science issues. Students will have hands on learning activities both in the classroom and in the field. Subjects covered will include: aquatics, current environmental issues, forestry, soils, and wildlife.
Field trips allow the students to see what is happening to their environment right in their home county. Students will get to experience science in the real world with assistance of professionals in each of the subject areas. The group will visit local sites to see how the people of Davidson County work to protect and improve our environment.
Classroom time will utilize fun - hands on activities to explore the environmental sciences. There will be plenty of time for students to ask questions and learn about the areas that interest them the most.
Activities from agriculture and forestry to construction and industry will be studied to learn how each group works to ensure that Davidson county continues to be a great place to work and live. Activities will be adapted so that each student will learn at their level. The Camp will be especially beneficial to students participating in the North Carolina Envirothon Program.
Activities will begin and end at the Davidson County Agricultural Center in Lexington from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Group size will be limited to 25 students. Transportation will be provided for field trips.
The goal of the Camp is to develop in the students an appreciation of the world around them so that they may become good stewards of the community they live in.
